Oyster Cards may be used on the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway
Oyster cards may NOT be used on express trains from London Airportsposted 4 November, 2007
About Oyster Card/Public Transport in London:
We had originally anticipated that we could purchase and Oyster Card for each participant in the festival and send it to you with your music. We have since learned that it is not possible to order a large group of Oyster Cards and that the purchase of each card is a separate transaction. Therefore we are unable to send you an Oyster Card for each participant.
If you plan to take trains and taxis to the hotel upon arrival at the airport, and take them back again on Sunday; if you are not arriving in time for sightseeing in London, and plan only to travel from St. John's Wood to the "Lord of the Rings"/Directors' Dinner evening, it is probably not worthwhile buying an Oyster Card. If, however, you have extra sightseeing time and plan to be in central London Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, buying an Oyster Card is probably a good moneysaver. You must pay a £3 deposit on your card (which you can get back if you turn it in) and can top of the card at any time. If you plan future trips to London, you can keep the card and top it up again in the future.
The London subway system (officially known as The London Underground, and unofficially known as "the tube") provides a quick, efficient means of transport around the city.
Individual journey tickets on the tube are quite expensive, however the cost of travel is greatly reduced for passengers who use a swipe card (called an Oyster Card). For example, a single journey between the festival hotel and central London would ordinarily cost £4 each way, however that cost is reduced to £1.50 each way by using an Oyster Card. The cards act as 'credit cards' on the London Underground as well as on the buses. They can be topped up by using machines at any tube station. These machines accept cash as well as credit cards.
Oyster Cards are valid on the Underground, buses, and the Docklands Light Railway. Oyster cards are NOT valid on the Heathrow Express, Gatwick Express, or other similar airport services. It should be noted, however, that the London Underground does serve Heathrow Airport. posted 4 November, 2007, revised 25 November, 2007
VISAS are needed for citizens of certain countries to visit the UK. It is the responsibility of each teacher to determine if any students attending the festival will need visas. If any students need a letter of invitation from the festival hosts, you should do the following as soon as possible.
Find out if any of your students need a visa to visit the UK.
If a visa is needed, send the following information to the host organizers
- full name of student
- the country from which they come
- which group they are in for the festival
- the school you represent, the school's address and fax number
- the name of the student's teacher.
- the FAX number for the Consulate of the UK in the city where you are applying for the visa.
ASL will fax you and the Consulate a letter of invitation for your student or students.
It will only delay your request if you send it to AMIS Headquarters.Look up the code number given for your school in the .pdf. Use this number to clearly mark all auditions being submitted for festivals during the 2007-2008 school year. Do NOT use the initials for your school on the audition discs, CDs, or cassettes.
If you do not find your school’s name on this list, email the Executive Consultant so a number can be assigned to your school.
Important Reminder for all preparing auditions:
Students are each to announce " I am violin number 1" (or the appropriate instrument and audition number) at the beginning of their audition. They must never announce their school or their name. The number they say is the order in which their audition appears on the CD. It must also match the online form that was submitted. This helps us to be sure we are hearing the auditionee we think we are hearing. The second student on the CD would say "I am violin number 2" and so on. Remember, all violins go on one disc, all violas go on one disc, all 'cellos go on one disc....
BE SURE TO READ ALL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE REHEARSAL CD BEFORE YOU START TO RECORD WITH YOUR STUDENTS! - posted 24 SeptemberAll students will be attending the West End musical The Lord of the Rings on Friday night during the Directors' Dinner. Directors will be accompanying their students to the theater before proceeding to the dinner, which is across the street from the theater. There will be 15 official chaperones in attendance at the show. Directors will be waiting for their students outside the theater at the end of the performance, and will accompany them back to the hotel. The cost of the theater tickets is included in the students' registration fee, as was agreed at the 2007 general meeting in Luxembourg.
You are reminded that there is no organized transport for HB&C 2008. Information on public transport is available above, and will also be available at the festival itself. posted 4 November, 2007
